Pressing the button on a camera is easy. However, 40 years experience of choosing the exact moment to ‘press the button’ and where to be when you click makes the difference between a ‘snap’ and a truly memorable image. That is the reason for my logo, Defining the Moment, Whilst teaching college students photography I emphasized how important it is to know your subject, whether that is a horse or a shy ‘camera phobic’ human. Understanding them and their environment is the first step. Then learning to anticipate ‘the moment’ will ensure perfect photos, this only comes with years of experience. Of course lightning fast reaction to that moment is paramount. I learned my skills when all cameras were film and cameras were clunky. So instant reactions made the photo or you missed it by a mile if you hesitated for a fraction of a second. My hobby of Fencing (the sword waving type) helped enormously with reaction times.
